● Blueberry Extract powder are strong antioxidants that can effectively quench reactive oxygen species in the body. 

This ability has been extensively studied in vitro and in vivo. In vitro studies have shown that fruit extracts from different varieties of blueberries exhibit different antioxidant activities. Of the 10 blueberry varieties studied, Polaris' anthocyanin extract had the highest antioxidant capacity. In in vitro studies, Polaris significantly promoted the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and inhibited malondialdehyde (MDA) in cellular activity (HepG2 cells) (Li, Liu, Lv, Yan, & Yuan, 2018). Cellular studies (human umbilical vein endothelial cells, HUVECs) showed decreased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and XO-1, but increased levels of SOD and HO-1, due to malvidin, malvidin-3-galactoside and Malvidin-3-glucoside of blueberry ( Du et al., 2016 , Huang et al., 2016 ).

● Neuroprotection

In a similar study, supplementation with blueberry powder improved cognitive function, which was said to stem from vascular modulating effects (McNamara et al., 2018). In another study, participants received either freeze-dried blueberry supplements or a placebo. After that, participants underwent a series of cognitive, balance and gait tests again at baseline and again at 45 and 90 days of the intervention. Research has shown that consuming blueberries in the diet of older adults can improve cognition in these areas (Miller, Hamilton, Joseph & Shukitt-Hale, 2017).

● Vision improvement

Numerous studies have provided an empirical argument that consumption of blueberry anthocyanins can improve vision. Blueberry anthocyanins appear to benefit vision by improving diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, night vision, and more.  

● Anti-diabetic and anti-obesity properties

Type 2 diabetes is associated with insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency, and is characterized by high blood sugar levels. Obesity is associated with an imbalance in energy intake and expenditure, characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue. Both are metabolic disorders and are associated with metabolic syndrome. Patients with type 2 diabetes often have hypertriglyceridemia and elevated plasma apolipoprotein C-III concentrations. The current findings suggest that the modulation of apolipoprotein C-III per-seis is a novel approach for the treatment of diabetic dyslipidemia (Florez et al., 2006).  

● Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial

As mentioned earlier, blueberry fruit is rich in anthocyanins, making it a powerful natural antioxidant that also produces significant anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. Anthocyanins exert anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting NF-κB translocation, activator protein 1, cAMP response element binding protein, and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein. Reducing the activity of NF-κB by stimulating IL-1β is an important mechanism of the anti-inflammatory effect of anthocyanins ( Taverniti et al., 2014 ).
