Natural astaxanthin powder is a natural seaweed extract. Astaxanthin is the most powerful antioxidant vitamin in nature. Its antioxidant activity is 550 times that of vitamin E. Experimental results
• Test of astaxanthin sunscreen effect
70 mg of natural astaxanthin was taken to measure its absorbance at 240~400 nm by solution method, and the test results are shown in Fig. 1.
From Fig. 1, it can be seen that natural astaxanthin has good absorption of UV light between 240~400 nm. It has good sun protection effect.
• Thermal stability test of natural astaxanthin
The natural astaxanthin powder was left at a constant temperature of 60°C for 8 h. We chose the solution method to determine the absorption curve of the sample. The final test results are shown in Fig. 2.
There was no significant change in the colour state of natural astaxanthin before and after the thermal stability test. And as can be seen from Fig. 2, the UV absorption spectrum of natural astaxanthin also has no obvious change. It indicates that natural astaxanthin powder has good thermal stability.
• Light stability test of natural astaxanthin
The natural astaxanthin oil was exposed to sunlight for 8 h, and the solution method was chosen to determine the absorption curve of the sample, and the test results are shown in Figure 3.
There was no significant change in the colour state of natural astaxanthin before and after the photostability test. And as can be seen from Figure 3, the UV absorption spectrum of natural astaxanthin oil also has no obvious change. This indicates that natural astaxanthin has good photostability.
• Determination of natural astaxanthin dosage
Natural astaxanthin powder was added to make sunscreen products at 2g, 2.5g, 3g, 3.5g, 4g, 5.0 g respectively. The absorbance was determined by tape method and the results are shown in Fig. 4.
From Fig. 4, it can be seen that the optimum dosage of natural astaxanthin is 4-5 g. The results are shown in Fig. 4.
• Sun protection effect of titanium dioxide as physical sunscreen agent
According to the recommended dosage in the literature, 3 g of titanium dioxide was added into the basic formula as a physical sunscreen agent to make sunscreen products. The absorbance at 240~400 nm was tested by tape method, and the results are shown in Fig. 5.
● Evaluation of the sunscreen effect of natural astaxanthin and titanium dioxide compounding
The optimum amount of natural astaxanthin powder 4.0 g and titanium dioxide 3 g were added to the basic formula to make sunscreen. The absorbance between 240~400 nm was tested by tape method, and the results are shown in Fig. 6.
As can be seen from Figure 6, the natural astaxanthin and titanium dioxide complex formulation has good sunscreen performance at 260-400nm. The sun protection effect is significantly improved than that of single titanium dioxide sunscreen. Especially in the 280-400 nm between the sunscreen has significantly improved.
• Comparison of natural astaxanthin complex formulation of sunscreen and commercially available basic sunscreen (SPF25) sun protection effect
The absorbance of the commercially available basic sunscreen (SPF 25) was also measured between 240-400 nm using the tape method, and the results are shown in Figure 7.
According to Figure 7, we can see that the natural astaxanthin complex sunscreen is in the range of 240-335nm. The sun protection effect is not as good as the effect of commercially available sunscreens. However, it can reach the average value of commercially available sunscreens with good sun protection effect. With the increase of wavelength, astaxanthin's advantages of sun protection are gradually reflected. Between 340-400 nm, natural astaxanthin compound sunscreen absorbance is higher, better sun protection. The sunscreen formulated with astaxanthin is more stable than the commercially available sunscreens and has good sun protection effect.
Conclusion
Through the study of natural astaxanthin sunscreen performance and the compound sunscreen performance after compounding with titanium dioxide, it is concluded that natural astaxanthin is a natural substance with good sunscreen effect. The addition of natural astaxanthin can reduce the dose of chemical sunscreen. Thus reducing the risk of allergies caused by sunscreen; natural astaxanthin in the 340 ~ 400 nm band of light absorption effect is obvious, is the best choice of sunscreen compound use. In addition, natural astaxanthin powder has a strong antioxidant properties.
