What is PQQ?

Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) was originally discovered. Bulk PQQ is a cofactor for enzymatic reactions in bacteria. In humans, its function is similar to that of B vitamins. It is called a "cofactor". It is called a "cofactor" only to mean that it helps the enzyme to do its job. One of these cofactor molecules transfers electrons during the reaction. This transfer is important for our mitochondria to produce energy.

 

Mechanism of action

Bulk PQQ binds to a protein in the body called quinone protein and alters its activity.

It is a very effective antioxidant. It can scavenge free radicals about 100 times more effectively than Vitamin C.

- Enzyme Inhibition

Bulk PQQ powder can inhibit thioredoxin reductase 1 (TrxR1). An enzyme that reduces thioredoxin. By inhibiting the activity of TrxR1, it increases the activity of Nrf2. This ultimately leads to increased production of antioxidants.

- Gene Expression

PQQ depletion affects the way many genes are expressed. One key gene affected by PQQ is PGC-1a. by activating PGC-1a, PQQ causes mitochondrial biosynthesis (the growth of new mitochondria) as well as many other beneficial actions.

Humans produce between 100 and 400 nanograms of PQQ per day.In bacteria, PQQ is synthesised from the amino acids L-tyrosine and glutamate. Although the exact role of PQQ in humans is unknown, it appears to regulate gene expression.

 

Health Benefits

PQQ is a natural compound. It is already present in our cells. Its benefits and whether supplementing with it is good for your health. To complicate matters, many of PQQ's mechanisms of action have only been studied in animal models. Thus, further obscuring its role in human health. 1) Inflammation and oxidative stress

Healthy individuals taking 20 mg of PQQ bulk powder (for a 150-pound male) had significantly lower levels of C-reactive protein and IL-6 (45% lower after 3 weeks). Lower doses did not reduce inflammation. Various urinary indicators of oxidative stress were also improved. This is consistent with enhanced mitochondrial function.

 

2) Sleep and Fatigue

PQQ improves sleep quality and reduces time to sleep.

There was an open human study of 17 patients with fatigue or sleep disorders. They were given bulk PQQ powder 20mg for 8 weeks and the results showed that PQQ significantly improved sleep quality. In the first test cycle after 4 weeks, the patients showed an improvement in sleep duration and sleep quality after falling asleep. Time to fall asleep was also reduced, but it took 8 weeks to reach significant levels. This study also noted improvements in appetite, obsessive-compulsive disorder and pain levels. This may have been brought about by the improvement in sleep. 

These results are very early results from a study. Larger, more reliable human trials will be needed to confirm pyrroloquinoline quinone powder in sleep and fatigue.

 

3) New to mitochondria: the role of PGC-1a

Mitochondrial biosynthesis links many health benefits. For example, bulk PQQ powder improves energy use and protects the body from free radicals. Mice and rats with diets deficient in pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) have reduced levels of mitochondria.The production of new mitochondria by PQQ occurs through the activation of CREB and PGC-1alpha, which are known pathways that increase mitochondrial biosynthesis.

As a result of the activation of the PGC-1alpha pathway, bulk pyrroloquinoline quinone increases NRiF-1 and NRF-2 proteins (transcription factors). These proteins protect us against more free radicals by increasing internal antioxidant production. They also protect us from toxins, UV rays, etc. PGC-1a is a "master regulator" that directly stimulates genes to promote mitochondrial cell respiration, growth and proliferation.

 

4) Memory and reasoning: the role of CREB

PQQ may activate a protein called CREB, which plays a key role in growth and gene expression.CREB also stimulates the growth of new mitochondria and increases BDNF . In animal studies, bulk PQQ powder reversed cognitive impairment caused by chronic oxidative stress and improved performance on memory tests. This potential benefit has not been studied in humans .

 

5) Brain Function

This occurred whether the chemical was used before or after the ischaemic event itself, suggesting that administration within the first few hours of a medical response may provide benefits to heart attack patients.

 

8) Insulin Resistance

According to some researchers, PQQ may attenuate fat-induced insulin resistance by increasing mitochondrial biosynthesis in muscle cells.PQQ increases hydrogen peroxide, which can inhibit the PTP1B enzyme and increase insulin sensitivity.

 

9) Obesity and weight management

The metabolic rate of rats deficient in PQQ was 10% slower than rats with normal PQQ levels . Researchers have suggested that supplementation with PQQ may increase overall metabolic rate, but this potential role has not been studied in humans.

 

10) Immune Health

Dietary deprivation of PPQ in mice caused abnormal immune function and impaired immune response to stressors. Adding bulk PQQ powder to the diet of mice increased levels of CD8+ cells and lymphocytes (important immune modulators) . The link between PQQ and immunity has not been studied in humans.

 

Safety

A study found that weekly intake of up to 0.3 mg/kg of bulk PQQ (20 mg for a 70 kg male) did not produce any adverse side effects. Very high doses of PQQ (500 to 1000 mg/kg body weight) caused death in rats.
