What Is Matrine Powder?
Matrine powder is a natural extract derived from the root of a plant called Sophora flavescens, also known as Kushen. It contains alkaloids, including matrine and oxymatrine, which have shown potential health benefits in traditional Chinese medicine, such as anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antiviral properties. It is often used as an herbal supplement and added to various skincare and personal care products.

how to extract Matrine Powder?
Matrine powder is a natural alkaloid ingredient primarily derived from the roots of Sophora flavescens, commonly known as Ku Shen. The extraction process plays a critical role in determining the purity, stability, and functional performance of the final product. In commercial production, several extraction approaches are used, each with distinct technical characteristics and application scenarios. The most common methods include solvent extraction, direct grinding, and fermentation-based extraction. Guanjie Biotech is a bulk Matrine Powder supplier, we use the Solvent method.
●Solvent method:
The solvent extraction method is the most widely used and industrially mature approach for producing high-purity matrine powder. In this process, freshly harvested or dried Ku Shen roots are first thoroughly washed to remove soil and impurities. The roots are then sliced or chopped into small pieces to increase the surface area and improve extraction efficiency.
Next, the prepared plant material is soaked in a suitable solvent, most commonly food-grade ethanol or a water–ethanol mixture. Under controlled temperature and time conditions, the solvent penetrates the plant tissues and dissolves the matrine and related alkaloids. After sufficient extraction, the liquid extract is separated from the solid residues through filtration.
The solvent is then removed by vacuum evaporation or reduced-pressure concentration, resulting in a thick, matrine-rich extract. To obtain a stable Matrine Powder form, the concentrated extract is further processed through spray drying or vacuum drying. This method offers good control over matrine content, consistency, and microbiological safety, making it suitable for pharmaceutical, agricultural, and nutraceutical applications.

● Grinding method:
The grinding method is a more traditional and straightforward approach that relies on physical processing rather than chemical extraction. In this method, Ku Shen roots are fully dried to reduce moisture content and prevent microbial growth. The dried roots are then mechanically ground into a fine powder using equipment such as hammer mills, stone mills, or industrial pulverizers.
After grinding, the powder is passed through sieves to remove coarse fibers and ensure uniform particle size. While this method preserves the whole-plant composition and avoids solvents, the matrine concentration is relatively low and less standardized compared to solvent-extracted products. As a result, ground Matrine Powder is typically used in traditional formulations, feed additives, or applications where precise active content is not critical.
● Fermentation method:
The fermentation method is a more advanced and biologically driven technique. In this process, Ku Shen roots are inoculated with selected microbial strains under controlled temperature and humidity conditions. During fermentation, enzymes produced by the microorganisms break down the plant cell walls, facilitating the release and transformation of matrine and other bioactive compounds.
Once fermentation is complete, the material of Matrine Powder is dried and finely milled into powder. In some cases, a secondary extraction step is applied to further concentrate matrine. Fermentation may enhance bioavailability and reduce certain undesirable components, but the process is technically complex and requires strict quality control. Therefore, it is mainly used in specialized or research-oriented production rather than large-scale standardized manufacturing.
Testing method:
Guanjie Biotech has our testing center and the third-party testing lab. If you need a Matrine powder testing report, we can provide.

● HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography)
It is used to separate, identify and quantify the compounds present in the matrine sample powder. HPLC involves the use of a high-pressure pump to force the sample through a column filled with a stationary phase. Different compounds in the sample will interact differently with the stationary phase and will be separated based on their chemical properties.
● TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography)
It involves the use of a stationary phase, which is coated on a thin layer of plastic or glass. The sample is spotted on the layer and allowed to separate. The separated compounds can then be visualized using a UV light or a dye.
● UV-Vis Spectroscopy
It involves the use of a spectrophotometer to measure the absorption of light by the matrine powder sample. The absorption spectrum can be used to identify the presence of certain compounds in the sample.
● GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry)
It involves the use of a gas chromatograph to separate the compounds in the matrine powder sample. The separated compounds are then identified using mass spectrometry, which measures the mass-to-charge ratio of ions.
