Production Process:

It is produced through a process known as extraction. The heads of chrysanthemums are separated from the stems, dried and placed into a vessel. Heat or a flammable chemical such as acetone is then used to extract the active ingredients of the flower heads. Other chemical compounds such as piperonyl butoxide (PBO) and d-limonene can also be added during the extraction process to increase the potency. The final product is a thick, pale yellow liquid with a distinctive aroma.

What is Pyrethrum?

Pyrethrum (Chyrsanthemum cinerariaefolium) is an aromatic, perennial flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region. The plant is widely cultivated and can also be found growing in many regions of the world, including the east coast of North America and Canada. The thick, white flowers of the chrysanthemum are harvested fresh and carefully dried to create a distinctive yellowish-tan powder referred to as pyrethrum or pyrethrum powder. This powder contains two primary active ingredients known as ‘pyrethrins’ and ‘cinerin’. When combined with a variety of other organic compounds, these active ingredients are then extracted and mixed into an oil – also referred to as pyrethrum oil or pyrethrins – and used as an effective form of natural pest control.

Pyrethrum bulk oil is most commonly used as an effective form of insect control. It is used to control a variety of pests, including fleas, flies, moths, and mosquitoes. It can be applied directly to the skin or clothing to ward off these pesky insects or can be sprayed, applied as dust or powder, and even used in combination with other chemicals, such as insect growth regulators. Function:

The active ingredients in pyrethrum bulk oil act as natural insecticides. The two main components, pyrethrins and cinerin, are neurotoxins that target the nervous system of insects. When applied, the pyrethrins and cinerin are quickly and efficiently absorbed through the pest’s exoskeleton and binds with nicotinergic acetylcholine receptors in the insect’s nervous system. This binding process causes paralysis and involuntary muscle contractions, and eventually death.

Pyrethrum extract oil is known to be a very effective form of pest control. However, it has a short residual life and any remaining pyrethrum oil can become inactive after just a few hours. Additionally, as time passes, insects may develop genetic resistance to pyrethrins and cinerin, thus making this natural insecticide less potent.
