Production process

The production process of coenzyme Q10 powder is diverse. Roughly, there are five methods: fermentation, semi-synthetic method, total synthesis method,bio-extraction method and cell culture method.

● Fermentation

The production of coenzyme Q10 by recombinant microbial fermentation was realized in 1977, which is considered as the most promising synthetic process and has become a hot spot for domestic and international development in recent years. The main strains of coenzyme Q10 production are Trichoderma reesei, Trichoderma denitrificans, and Microcyclus methaneus.

 

● Semi-synthetic method

The semi-synthetic process developed is to obtain methyl dimethoxybenzene by bromination, etherification and oxidation of p-methyl phenol as raw material, and then condense it with lycopene extracted from tobacco or potato leaves to obtain coenzyme Q10 powder. the key of this method is how to link the side chain to the parent ring.

 

● Total synthesis method

The total synthesis process developed by Eem and Kanan in 1988 for the production of coenzyme Q10 powder is the only successful total synthesis technique, but it is difficult to synthesize linear unsaturated side chains. However, due to the difficulty of synthesizing linear unsaturated side chains and the harsh synthesis conditions, it is still a long way from industrialization.

 

● Bio-extraction method

Bio-extraction method is the oldest and most basic production process in the world, and for some time used to be the only method of coenzyme Q10 production. However, due to the low content of coenzyme Q10 in plants and animals, the complexity of various chemical components, and the restricted source of raw materials (mainly from fresh animal liver), the product is costly and expensive, and the large-scale production is somewhat limited.

 

● Cell culture method

Plant cell culture technology is a technique in which a part of the plant body is aseptically treated and placed on artificial medium to proliferate its cells, which are then cultured as needed. Various parts of the plant, such as roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, anthers and pollen, can be used as explants to initiate cell culture, and the resulting dedifferentiated cell masses are called guaiac tissue, and the transfer of the guaiac tissue to liquid medium for culture is called suspension culture.
