How is Berberine Produced?

Guanjie Biotech takes alkaline water extraction berberine bulk powder. Alkaline water extraction is a classical plant extraction method, which uses alkaline solution to extract alkaloids from plants, and then purifies and crystallises the target substances through a series of chemical reactions and physical operations. Below is our production process.

1. Raw material preparation

Raw material treatment

-Drying.

Raw materials are dried in sunlight or in a dryer to remove excess moisture.

- Crushing:

The dried raw material is crushed to a fine powder by a pulveriser.

After drying, the raw material is crushed into berberine bulk powder by pulveriser.

 

2. Lye Extraction

Preparation of aqueous alkali solution

An aqueous solution of alkali is prepared at a certain concentration. Usually we use alkaline solutions such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH). The choice of concentration needs to be optimised according to the raw material and the extraction process.

 

Extraction process

- Mixing and soaking.

The crushed plant powder is mixed with an aqueous alkaline solution. Soak at a certain temperature (usually 50-80°C) for several hours. The alkaline solution fully penetrates the plant cells and dissolves the berberine in them.

- Stirring.

During the steeping process, appropriate stirring is done to promote the full contact between alkaline aqueous solution and plant powder to improve the extraction efficiency.

-Filtering

The mixture after soaking is filtered through filter cloth or filter paper to remove the solid residue. This yields an alkaline extract containing berberine.

 

3. Neutralisation and precipitation

Neutralisation reaction

The basic extract is mixed with an acidic solution (e.g. hydrochloric acid) to perform a neutralisation reaction. At this point, berberine will be converted to berberine hydrochloride and a precipitate will be formed.

Precipitation separation

The precipitate is separated from the supernatant by centrifugation or static settling and the precipitate is collected.

4. Purification and crystallisation

Recrystallisation

The precipitate is dissolved in an appropriate amount of hot water, and then berberine hydrochloride is recrystallised by lowering the temperature or adding ethanol to further improve its purity.

Filtration and drying

The recrystallised berberine hydrochloride is separated by filtration. It was then dried in a low-temperature vacuum drying oven. Finally, we will get berberine bulk powder.

 

5 Quality control

Detection of purity

We use High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrophotometer (UV-Vis) to detect the purity of Berberine Hydrochloride to ensure that it meets the quality standards.

 

What Does Berberine Do?

● Anti-arrhythmic

Arrhythmia is usually manifested as the rhythm of the heartbeat becomes uneven, or the heartbeat rate is too fast or too slow. Newly discovered that Flavopiridol has anti-arrhythmic effects. It can treat many types of heart rhythm disorders and has no adverse effects on heart rate, blood pressure, liver and kidney function, or blood picture. Most antiarrhythmic drugs have the disadvantage of weakening myocardial contractility. However, berberine bulk powder can strengthen myocardial contractility. Therefore, it can be treated with berberine hydrochloride. For many kinds of tachycardia patients, each time oral 0.3 ~ 0.6 g, four times a day. 2 ~ 4 weeks for a course of treatment. Generally, it works in about 7 days, and the total effective rate is 78%. It can also be used in patients with pulmonary arrhythmia or ventricular arrhythmia associated with heart failure.

 

● Anti-Heart Failure
